ARTIST OF THE MONTH 1

(July 2010)

~Michael Forman~

Michael’s photography work spans back to 1991. He was so successful with his earlier work that he took out quite a few photography awards. Shortly afterwards, TAFE employed him to instruct others on how to achieve similar results and still does this very day! For Michael, understanding light, combined with good camera work is what begins the journey into photography. His subject interests are mostly landscapes, nudes, watery scenes, and historical places of interest, whilst experimenting with a new technique known as extractional imagery…a first for Dayboro and for photography.

Michael runs personal photography workshops from Dayboro and has been a regular instructor at the Clifton Art Workshops, The Lamington Light Festival at O’Reilly’s Guesthouse and guest speaker and judge at The Queensland Camera Group in Bardon.

His current exhibition "Outlining Women - Stage 1" is on display at the gallery during the month of July.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH 2

~Lorraine Emerson~

Lorraine Emerson’s work is usually paint on canvas, however, for the month of July, Lorraine will have an exhibition of a different form. The main room of The Dayboro Art Gallery will accommodate a display of felted scarves and wraps. The pieces on show are handmade with a variety of Pure Australian Merino Wools embellished with silk, organza, lace and fabric. Other pieces include Alpaca and Llama wool that has been worked into scarves and wraps.

“I have taken the time to collect a quantity of our local Llama wool, wash and prepare the fibre in readiness for the felting process.

Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woollen fibres. While some types of felt are very soft, some are tough enough to form construction materials.

Felt making is still practiced by nomadic people in Central Asia and northern parts of East Asia, where rugs, tents and clothing are regularly made. Some of these are traditional items, such as the classic yurt, while others are designed for the tourist market, such as decorated slippers. In the Western world, felt is widely used as a medium for expression in textile art as well as design, where it has significance as an ecological textile. Nuno felting is a technique where you can bond loose fibre such as wool into a sheer fabric such as silk to create lightweight pieces of wearable art.
